Great Debate 2016: Unsung Heroes

You don’t have to be Einstein to know that some scientists are more famous than others. The Science Nation will shine the spotlight on the forgotten scientists of the past  with a debate tournament to see who is the greatest unsung hero of all. With additional rounds of improvised, audience-inspired, topics this Great Debate is 90 minutes of science & laughs that promises to be fun for people of all ages.

Events will be held on the following dates and cities:

11 June – Brisbane

Debaters competing for glory in Brisbane include: co-creator of Smart Enough to Know Better – a podcast of science, comedy and ignorance – Dan Beeston; writer and performer Natalie Bochenski; computational atom builder and occasionally DJ Dinosaur at kids parties Dr Michael Bromley; ecologist and lover of green slime Prof Michele Burford; mathematician and Brisbane’s reigning Great Debate champion A/Prof Ben Burton; palaeontologist studying ancient fanged kangaroos and cross stitch enthusiast Kaylene Butler; physicist, engineer, science communicator and entertainer Dr Joel Gilmore; and physicist, science communicator and Science Nation founder Dr Andrew Stephenson.

Brisbane 8

  • Time: 4-5:30 pm (doors open at 3:30pm), 11 June 2016.
  • Venue: The Edge, State Library of Queensland, South Brisbane.
  • Tickets: $10 online, $15 at the door (cash only).

15 June – Adelaide

Debaters competing for glory in Adelaide include: ex-agricultural scientist and science communication researcher Dr Heather Bray; metaboloepigeneticist and comic Dr Hannah Brown; anthropologist and evolutionary scientist Prof Alan Cooper; chemist, Adelaide’s reigning Great Debate champion and the former face of Adelaide Noby Leong; marine biologist, science communicator and salsa dancer Dr Tullio Rossi; physical chemist and surface scientist Dr Andrew Stapleton; physicist, science communicator and Science Nation founder Dr Andrew Stephenson; and paeleontologiest, RiAus Director and self-confessed train nut Dr Paul Willis.

Adelaide 8

  • Venue: RiAusThe Science Exchange, Adelaide.
  • Tickets: $10 online, $15 at the door.

19 June – Sydney

Debaters competing for glory in Sydney include: statistician and model(ler) Dr Craig Anderson; anthropologist, evolutionary scientist and science communicator A/Prof Darren Curnoe; neuroscientist and jazz singer Josien de Bie; biologist, social insect enthusiast and defender of science Dr Marianne Peso; veterinarian, neuroscientist and surf life saving volunteer Prof Jacqueline Philips; physicist, freediver and mountaineer Dr Peter Rohde; physicist, science communicator and Science Nation founder Dr Andrew Stephenson; and chemist, science communicator, host of Up and Atom, and Sydney’s reigning Great Debate champion Dr Alice Williamson.

Sydney 8

  • Time: 2:30-4pm (doors open at 2pm), 19 June 2016.
  • Venue: Sydney Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo, Sydney.
  • Tickets: $15 Adult/$10 MAAS Member/$8 Concession online. All tickets $20 at the door. Ticket includes Museum entry.
